Can I vote at any location on General Voting Day?

• Yes, Port Moody votes “at large.”

I will be away on General Voting Day (October 17, 2026). What options do I have to vote?

• Qualified electors who will be away on General Voting Day can vote in one of two ways:
  • Vote in person at one of the two advance voting opportunities:
    • When: Wednesday, October 7, 2026 and Saturday, October 10, 2026
      Where: Port Moody Recreation Complex (Wellness Room), 300 Ioco Road
      Time: 8:00am to 8:00pm
  • Vote by mail ballot.

Will the City be providing mobile voting for those who can’t get to the polls?

• No. Voters who cannot get to the polls will have the opportunity to vote by mail ballot.

I am not a Canadian citizen. Can I vote?

• No. You must be a Canadian citizen to be eligible to vote.

How do I register to vote in the 2026 Port Moody election?

• The City uses the Provincial Voters List. If you are on the Provincial Voters List for Port Moody (i.e. you are already registered to vote in previous provincial elections in B.C.), then you are already registered to vote in the Port Moody election.
• You may register at the time of voting at a voting location on General Voting Day or at one of the Advance Voting Opportunities.
  • Note: Registration with Elections BC closed on August 18, 2026. 

What are the qualifications to vote in Port Moody?

What documents do I need to register to vote on voting day?

• If you are not on the list of registered electors at the time of voting, you will need to present two documents that provide evidence of your identity and place of residence, at least one of which must include your signature. Examples of acceptable forms of IDs include:
  • B.C. driver’s licence
  • B.C. cervices card, B.C. CareCard, or Gold CareCard
  • BCID card
  • Owner’s certificate of insurance and vehicle licence issued by ICBC
  • Social insurance number card
  • Citizenship card or certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Canadian passport
  • Property tax notice
  • Utility bill
  • Debit or credit card or statement issued by a financial institution
  • Student ID card
  • Government-issue documents such as cheque stub, pension plan benefits statement, Old Age Security statement
  • Income tax assessment notice
  • Canadian Forces identification
  • a document issued by the Government of Canada that certifies that the applicant is registered under the Indian Act (Canada), such as a status card
  • a citizenship or membership card issued by a First Nation
  • a citizenship card issued by Métis Nation British Columbia

I am not a resident of Port Moody, but I own property in Port Moody. Am I eligible to vote?

• You may qualify as a non-resident property elector (NRPE). Please see the Voting Information page for more information on qualifications and required documentation to register and vote as an NRPE.

Can non-resident property electors vote for School Trustees in Port Moody?

• No. Per the provincial School Act, non-resident property owners residing in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, the Village of Anmore, and the Village of Belcarra are not eligible to vote in the School Trustee race in the City of Port Moody. They are only eligible to vote for the School Trustee candidates running in their jurisdiction of residence.

Will mail ballot voting be offered for the 2026 General Local Election in Port Moody?

Who can vote by mail ballot?

• All qualified resident and non-resident property electors of Port Moody can vote by mail ballot. If you meet the qualifications to vote as either a resident or non-resident property elector in Port Moody, you are eligible to vote by mail.

Does a candidate have to be a Port Moody resident to run for office in Port Moody?

• No. There is no requirement in provincial legislation for a candidate running for the offices of Mayor, Council, or School Trustee for the City of Port Moody to be a resident of Port Moody.

How do I submit my nomination documents?

• Information regarding the candidate nomination process can be found in the candidate nomination package.

I have questions regarding campaign financing. Who should I contact?

• Elections BC administers local government campaign financing rules in accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act (LECFA). All questions on this topic should be directed to Elections BC.

When can I install election campaign signs? When do campaigns signs have to be removed?

• Per the City’s new Election and Political Signs Bylaw No. 3514, campaign signs can be installed no earlier than fourteen (14) days prior to General Voting Day, or Saturday, October 3, 2026 for the 2026 election.
• All campaign signs must be removed within seven (7) days after General Voting Day. For the 2026 election the removal deadline is Saturday, October 24, 2026.

Where can I install election campaign signs in the city?

• The rules regarding permissible campaign sign placement in the city are outlined in the new Election and Political Signs Bylaw No. 3514. Please be advised that the permissible locations for campaign sign placement on public property have been updated in Bylaw No. 3514. All candidates and their representatives are strongly encouraged to review and be familiar with these new and revised locations outlined in Schedule A of the new bylaw.

Are there any rules around campaign activities that I should be aware of?

• Yes. All campaign activities must be compliant with the Local Government Act, the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act (LECFA), and all applicable City bylaws (including the Election and Political Signs Bylaw No. 3514).
  • Division 18 (sections 161 to 166) of the Local Government Act outlines election offences and the penalties.
  • All campaign advertising must be compliant with LECFA.
  • The City has issued Guidelines for Respectful Dialogue and Civic Discourse to encourage respectful and healthy civic discourse.
